Tickets to the UK’s National Lottery have never sold as fast as this, after unprecedented numbers of players have tried to snap up tickets. The sensation comes after the National Lottery has rolled over to record £50.4m jackpot, as the lotto once again failed to see a winner claim its previous £46.5m prize.
The current total is a UK lotto record, and due to new rules, the odds of winning could see players pocket easier wins. A rule change in October stated that if the Jackpot was not won after Wednesday, the prize will be split between players with the next highest winning combination on the following Saturday.
Someone is – or several players are – destined to win the jackpot on Wednesday. If there is a single ticket winner, they will instantly be entered into the top spot as the record for the largest ever UK National Lottery win.
The record for a National Lottery win was recorded in 1996, although three players shared the eventual £42 million pot. The largest ever single win also occurred in 1996, when Mark Gardiner and Paul Maddison – two work colleagues from Sussex – shared a £22.5 million prize.
News is already flying around about how much a winner would become, with their winnings being worth the same amount as Adele, and give them more money than Andy Murray and Rory McIlroy.
Nobody has won the National Lottery jackpot since November, but the hype is certainly there. With the promise that there simply must be a winner by Saturday, millions of people will be flying into their local newsagents and supermarkets to ensure that they have a ticket to the National Lottery draw of a lifetime. This time – more than any other – it really could be you.
