Saturday night’s Lotto 6-49 proved itself a fruitless draw, after no players managed to bag the top prize. The Canadian lottery has had a number of high profile rollovers in recent months, with the jackpot now worth around $12 million.
The draw on Saturday night was worth an estimated CAD$7 million, but the rollover now means that the prize will grow to the next draw, which will be held on Wednesday, December 23.
Lotto 6-49’s previous cash prize was won on December 12, when one player managed to scoop a jackpot worth $14.5m. The winning player was residing in Alberta. Lotto Max also failed to produce a winner last week. The $60 million pot remains for the next draw on Christmas Day, although players can scoop up to 35 MaxMillions prizes in the draw.
Elsewhere in the world, Spain’s annual Christmas lottery is handing out $2.43 billion in prizes this year. Yes, Madrid is coughing out billions of dollars in prizes in their El Gordo (Fat One) lottery.
People spent hours lining up on Saturday purchasing tickets for the draw on Tuesday. As many as three quarters of the 46 million people in the country are expected to compete to win the top prize.
The huge sums handed out is a Spanish Christmas tradition, which started in 1812. The top prize is $435,000, meaning that there are many players who will pocket prizes in the draw. El Gordo is more than like a raffle, then a true lottery, with thousands of winners pocketing prizes each year in the biggest lotto game on the planet.
As Christmas draws near, it seems that rollovers just keep on coming, with prizes a plenty on the way just in time for the special season.
