Another major lottery win has been recorded in the Irish town of Belmullet. The small town seems to have some sort of special bond with lotteries, after another family scooped €14 million on a lotto game.
It isn’t just the town that has spookily turned out winner after winner. In fact, the same newsagent has. Carey’s Newsagents in Belmullet has provided so many winners now. The most recent winner was won by a local, who purchased the ticket there. The total amount they have won is thought to be just shy of €14m, standing a €13.7m.
Lorraine O’Connor who owns the newsagents has said that they know it was a €10, 4-line Quick Pick ticket, which is common on Saturdays in the town. Last August, a customer managed to win €500,000 on the Euromillions, and two years ago, the Lotto Plus paid out €350,000 to a lucky winner who had bought their ticket in the newsagents in Belmullet.
Lorraine’s aunt and uncle also run shops in Loughrea, and Lucan, and between them they have scooped together around “about 15 or 16” major lottery wins in total. The shops have all been owned by the family since the 1980s, and given the sheer amount of publicity the newsagents get when a ticket is won that has been bought from them, there is no sign of that changing.
The win has attracted a lot of press to the newsagents, even if nobody knows for sure just yet who the winner really is.
If you’re thinking of playing a lottery in the future, and you’re within travelling distance of Belmullet, it may be worth a visit then. Who knows, maybe Carey’s Newsagents can make it 16 or 17 big wins.
